Drooping Palm Fronds? Why You Must Act Fast Against the Red Palm Weevil

Red palm weevil on a palm — red palm weevil treatment in Marbella by MAPECO

A palm is one of the defining features of a Costa del Sol garden — and the red palm weevil can destroy one from the inside before you realise anything is wrong. By the time the crown starts to droop, the larvae have often been feeding inside the trunk for weeks.

If you've noticed wilting central fronds, the worst thing you can do is wait. Acting fast is what saves the palm.

The damage happens where you can't see it

The red palm weevil lays its eggs in the crown, and the larvae tunnel down through the trunk, eating the palm from the inside. Because the damage is internal, the outward signs — collapsing central leaves, chewed fibre, a fermenting smell or oozing from the trunk — appear only once the infestation is advanced.

This hidden timeline is exactly why so many palms are lost: by the time they look sick, the clock is already running down.

Why an untreated palm rarely survives — and can infect others

Left untreated, an infested palm usually dies, and the weevils can spread to healthy palms nearby. Phytosanitary treatment is also a regulated activity in Spain, so it's not something to improvise with garden-centre products.

Early, professional intervention often saves a palm that would otherwise be beyond help — and protects the rest of your garden.

How certified treatment can save your palm

We assess the palm's health and the extent of the infestation, then inject insecticide into the trunk to reach the larvae feeding inside. Where needed, we add external spraying to kill adults, and a preventive systemic treatment to protect healthy palms for months.

We are certified to carry out these phytosanitary treatments. Here's our red palm weevil treatment in Marbella.

Frequently asked questions

Should I treat my healthy palms too?

Preventive treatment is strongly recommended in affected areas; we advise based on your palms and location.
